Fulbright
What is Fulbright?
Fulbright is a programme of grants for international educational exchange for scholars, educators, postgraduate students and professionals. The Fulbright programme operates in 145 countries and with 51 commissions. The programmes were established to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.
The Fulbright programme provides funds for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools abroad. The initial reach of this programme had been primarily European countries, but now the programme operates worldwide.
Who can participate?
Fulbright is open for American graduate and postgraduate students, scholars, researchers, instructors and professionals. There is no upper age limit and candidates must have a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent. There is no restriction on the field of study.
Do I have to speak Hungarian in order to participate?
No. The University of Debrecen offers a number of English language programs, mainly in the fields of natural sciences, computer science, engineering, medical studies, music, gender studies, drama studies, British and American studies. Additional courses may be started on demand.
What can I expect as a Fulbright exchange student / scholar?
For students the award covers standard living and study expenses, any tuition fees and roundtrip travel. Although the award is normally for one academic year, the Commission is able to offer a limited number of students the opportunity to extend or renew their grant. A scholar receives a full award, plus a monthly stipend in Hungarian Forints. The grantee will either be provided with housing or will receive a monthly housing allowance, plus an initial allowance to cover travel, excess baggage, settling in, books and services all based on the number of dependents and the grant category.
How do I apply?
For American students initial screening is done in the United States by the Institute of International Education (IIE), 809 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017, USA. The application deadline is October 20, and the results are usually announced the following spring. For scholars initial recruitment and evaluation is done by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), 3007 Tilden Street, N.W., Suite 5M, Washington, DC 20008-3009. The closing date for applications is normally August 1, and results are announced the following spring.
