How can I get transportation from Budapest to Debrecen?
Assuming, that you arrive at the Ferihegy Airport, you have three possibilities:
1. You can come by train to Debrecen
Trains leave to Debrecen from the "Nyugati or Keleti Palyaudvar", The West or East Main Railway Station
You can buy a ticket for the Airport Minibus at the Transit Lounge, for 1500 HUF. It will take you to the Railway Station.
DO NOT TAKE TAXIS to travel to the Railway station!
At the Railway station buy a Full Rate train ticket to Debrecen for InterCity Train
Train Timetable can be found here. (www.elvira.hu)
Take the InterCity Train to Debrecen, as it is more convenient and faster than normal trains.
2. You can come by bus
MALEV, the Hungarian Airlines have a bus service to Debrecen too. These buses leave the Airport on every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 23:00. The Bus tickets can be obtained at the airport for 3900 HUF. If you want to take this bus, you have to inform the Secretariat of the English Program, so we can reserve a seat for you. If more than 10 people are coming at the same time, we can arrange a special bus at any given time too.
3. You can make special arrangements with an agent, who will come and pick you up at the Airport
If you wish, we can help you to find an agent, who will come and pick you up at the airport. This is advisable, if you have lots of luggage to carry, and you do not have accommodation reserved in Debrecen.
The costs are variable; usually it is between 15000-20000 HUF.
If you need help, contact Ms. Eszter Bartha at the Secretariat of the English Program.
How can I find an apartment?
When you plan to arrive in Debrecen, it is advisable to make a Hotel Reservation for about three days. Once you arrive you can contact Housing Agencies or an Agent who will help you to find an apartment.
If you contact a Housing Agency, you have to pay around 10000-15000 HUF fee to them. This fee includes all of the paper work and they will take you to see the pre-selected apartments.
You have to obtain three important documents from the landlord/Housing Agency:
1. An English and Hungarian copy of your lease. The Hungarian version should be presented to the Office of Immigration and Nationality.
2. Two copies of the "Address registration form".
3. "Ownership certificate" from the Hungarian Land Office, certifying that the landlord is the owner of the apartment. Ask your landlord for the document.
Usually, houses can be rented for 6 months, and sometime you have to pay the rent in advance. Apart from this, a 2 months rent is asked as a deposit, which will be returned to you when you leave the house without debts or damage. Obviously, the duration of the rental period and the deposit is negotiable.
A ene-bedroom apartment costs about 200 EUR upwards, and 2 bedroom apartments are about 350 EUR per month. You can find cheaper and more expensive houses obviously.
Usually all houses are furnished, and are well equipped (washing machine, TV, microwave, etc.)
Rent depends on the quality of the house and the equipment, and mainly from the distance to the University. Apartments at walking distance are the most expensive ones.
You can find an apartment by newspaper advertisements too. But in this case, you need to have somebody, who speaks Hungarian to take you around.
If you want an agent to help you finding an apartment please contact the Secretariat of the English Program.
