Research and development
The University of Debrecen is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Hungary, offering the widest scale of educational programmes in the country. Accordingly, scientific work and applied research also cover broad and diverse areas.
The great majority of our research work is of the high standards necessary to ensure international impact, as proved through the reputation of the publications in which it may be regularly found and by citation indeces. In the "Hungarian" sciences, research projects are of a national character and impact, and in certain areas, such as local history or settlement geography, they are closely connected to the immediate environment.
Several units of the University have strong scientific and professional links with the Debrecen Chapter of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, whose activity relies mainly on the researchers and instructors of the University (14 of whom are members of the Academy and 133 are doctors of the Academy).
Other areas of professional and research cooperation include those with other Hungarian universities with corresponding research profiles and with the appropriate departments of the Academy. One of them, the Nuclear Research Institute, is based in Debrecen. In addition, there are numerous international research contacts, working together with dozens of universities and research institutions all over the world.
The University of Debrecen offers the widest scale of PhD programmes in the country. Our 25 doctoral schools covers natural sciences, arts, agricultural, medical, engineering and social sciences, awarding PhD degrees to approx. 150 students every year. Doctoral training is coordinated by the Scientific Directorate of the University, which also aids the work of the Doctoral and Habilitation Council and coordinates scientific research tenders.
Research results are managed by the Technology Transfer Office, whose tasks also involve the utilization of R&D results and technologies developed at the University. The TTO facilitates the transfer of research results achieved at the University into business and industry, as well as disseminates innovation culture among the citizens of the University. The TTO is in connection with the various research centres of the University, which realize research of the highest standard in most disciplines.
