Squirrel: UD’s mascot
Squirrel has been chosen to be the official mascot of the university. On the occasion, the institution adopted the squirrels of Debrecen Zoo.
Diplomas obtained at the University of Debrecen have an excellent value on the labour market. Knowledge and skills acquired here may be equally well used in practical life and further education or research. The float intends to express these thoughts in a playful way, with squirrels symbolizing students and acorn standing for knowledge.
‘The university’s management supported students’ initiation to adopt the squirrel as a mascot and to make it the star of our float. It is the fifth time the university participates in the Parade, hence the five squirrels on the float. Participating in the Parade every year expresses the close ties the university cultivates with the city’ Rector István Fábián said.
‘Debrecen Zoo has been an external department of the university for 6 years now. We contribute to the training of conservation professionals and biologists. It is a nice gesture from the university to adopt an animal that is native to Debrecen and the Great Forest, and it’s also a supportive act’ Zoo Director Sándor Tibor Nagy said.
The Royal Hungarian University of Debrecen was founded a hundred years ago, in 1912. Today, the University of Debrecen is a leading Hungarian research university with 15 faculties, 25 doctoral schools and over 30.000 students.
Debrecen Zoo was opened in 1958. Back then, 34 species lived together on 3 hectares. Today, visitors can meet 170 species on 17 hectares; among others, the largest collection of squirrels in the country is to be found here.
