VÉD-ELEM project – The system-based study of cellular networks responsible for the protection of the human body

Academic head of project management: Nagy László

  • Title of project: VÉD-ELEM - Az emberi szervezet védelmét biztosító sejthálózatok rendszerszemléletű vizsgálata
  • Type of grant: TÁMOP-4.2.2.A-11/1/KONV
  • Description: The body's defense system consists of a number of organs and tissues and the joint work of these components makes the building and operation of an effective defense network possible. Medical biology research in the past few decades has made it obvious that there are numerous such diseases which are caused by the failure of the immune system, which can either mean its damage or over activity. These include immunodeficiencies and chronic inflammations, autoimmune diseases, infections and most recently they have identified components characteristic of inflammatory diseases in the case of atherosclerosis and obesity-related diabetes as well. All these together with the spectacular improvement of the last decades in the development of such methods that enable us to study the operation of cells and tissues on a systemic basis imply that we need complex approaches and the coordinated work of several working groups to get a better understanding of the defense systems. The VÉD-ELEM working group network aims to meet this challenge building on the traditionally high quality basic and clinical immunology research carried out in Debrecen and the traditionally close cooperation between the theoretical institutions and clinical working groups. By studying the components of the human immune system, the objective of the research network is to identify and explore those principles and rules that characterize the defense (immune) processes on a systemic level. By understanding these, we get a better understanding of the structure and operation of the immune system and thus of the mechanism of the emergence of diseases affecting a large section of the population, as well as the diagnosis and possible treatment of the diseases. The direct target group of the project is the scholarly community of this field of research, especially the senior researchers and the young scholars, students participating in university and doctoral programs. The biotechnology and pharmacology companies connected to the project are also part of the direct target group. The indirect target group is made up by the patients suffering from inflammatory diseases, cancer, autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases, as well as the physicians treating them, the medical diagnostics companies involved in the field, and the wider scientific community. Society as a whole is also affected by the project as the above diseases affect a large portion of society. The work of those participating in the VÉD-ELEM network focuses on four areas: The origin and differentiation of the cells of the immune system and the regulation of the expression of their genomes. The signaling and execution mechanisms of cells of the immune system. Understanding the interactions of the host and pathogens. Studying the defense function of the skin and the gastrointestinal tract.
